Weekly Update

This Thursday Sept. 20th we will be hosting Back to School Night along with a school barbecue here at Hopkins.  The barbecue will take place prior to the Back to School Night events starting at 5:00. Back to School Night will begin promptly at 6:00 PM in the cafeteria, then parents will head down to their student’s classroom for information from individual teachers.   I will be going over the key points of fourth grade curriculum, homework policies, classroom expectations, etc.  I hope you will be able to attend. Below is a message from the office regarding childcare and the timeline for the evening.

5:00 BBQ Begins (Hot dogs, drink, chips and cookie) Hopkins families only

(Hosted by Horizon Community Care)

6:00 - 6:30 General Session in the cafeteria (Teachers are not required to attend this session)

6:35 – 7:00 Classroom Session 1

7:05 - 7:30 Classroom Session 2

We encourage all parents to attend Curriculum Night.

Picture day is scheduled for Tues. Sept. 18th.  Picture packet order forms were sent home in your student’s back pack during the first week of school. Please have your student bring them to me on or before picture day.

The students have begun using their Gold Hawk Organizers to record their homework assignments. Your child should be reading at least 25-35 min. per night. All other paper homework (usually math) is due on Thursdays.

The Fun Run will be taking place on Friday September 28th. We had our kick off assembly today, and students will be bringing home their pledge packets. As always parents are welcome to participate and join in the fun!  I will let you know when I know what time our class runs.

During our class time this week we have been working hard in math. The content has been focused on visual models of multiplication and division. The students have been building arrays with tiles and figuring area for the space inside.  We have also been learning about the vocabulary associated with multiplication and division. Prime numbers and composite numbers were also introduced this week.  In science we started a science unit on rocks and minerals. The students are learning about sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks.  We have a new health curriculum –The Great Body Shop.  We will be sending home parent letters about once a month informing parents of what topics will be discussed in class.  The magazines students use will also be sent home.  Attached is the Unit 1 parent letter. In reading we are setting up routines for reading workshop.  We practiced reading intensely to grow ideas and discussed how important it is to select “good fit books.” Next week we will be fine-tuning a special art/poetry project for Back to School Night!

We have two field trips are scheduled in October!  First we will do a short field trip to Our Table Farm Cooperative on Tues. Oct. 9th from 10:30-12:00.  The second trip will be 4th grade’s annual trip to the NW Rice Museum of Rocks and Minerals on Friday October 19th.  We will leave at 8:40 in the morning and will return around 1:30 PM.  I believe we have enough volunteers for both trips at this point.

Have a great weekend!
